Week 1 Favorable Matchups
“New Teams, Same Bad QBs” – do these guys actually make their teams worse?
Byron Leftwich vs Cowboys (Career high – holding Coach Tomlin’s clipboard in Super Bowl XLIII)
Kyle Orton @ Bengals Do you want this guy leading your team?
“Rookie Debauchry” – their teams have set these rookies up for failure
Mark Sanchez @ Texans (Didn’t the Jets lose to USC in an off-season scrimmage? Welcome to your new home, Senor Sanchez)
Matthew Stafford @ Saints (This guy will be considered a hero if he stays in the field of play…….bad Orlovsky)
“Old Faithfuls” – you can always rely on these guys for a couple picks-for-6
Jamarcus Russell vs Chargers (Offseason visits to filmroom: 30, Offseason visits to China Buffet: Daily)
Trent Edwards @ Patriots (I’ll give him a quarter-and-a-half until T.O. rips him on National TV)
Breaking Down Week 1
Breaking Down Suspect Quarterbacks Week 1
Each week, we’ll preview quarterbacks on the verge of performance that would make Heath Shuler (54.3) proud. As always, please remember some important Bad Quarterback considerations. Anytime a quarterback is listed, his career QB rating will be listed in parenthesis. Frequently, a bad quarterback will be measured against the Kordoza Line. This line represents Kordell Stewart’s (70.8) life time QB rating, which included 77 Touchdowns and 84 Interceptions. Hopefully, these characters outshine the previously mentioned signal callers.
Stafford (NA) – managed to throw 1 INT in every PRESEASON appearance. Offensive coordinator Scott Linehan summed up why Stafford won the job, “He’s made a significant impression on all of us, A quarterback has to know, and I think (head coach Jim Schwartz) does an outstanding job of letting guys know this is a realistic situation right here.” This guy will be considered a hero if he stays in the field of play…….bad Orlovsky
Sanchez (NA) – first JETS rookie quarterback to get a start on Opening Day since 1985. Rich Chimini of the NY Daily News sums it up best Sanchez started only 16 games at USC, a safe cocoon for college quarterbacks, he is an unknown in some respects. For instance: He never had a fourth-quarter comeback win on the road. In fact, he had only one at home, a three-point rally against Arizona. How will he respond on Sunday if he’s down by 10 in Houston?”
Edwards (79.1) hard to imagine that “the Trent Edwards” could run an offensive coordinator out of town. But he did and this comes from a guy that against Cleveland last year, he threw for 148 yards and three interceptions, but the following week he passed for 273 yards and tds. Edwards managed to go 2 – 8 in his last 10 starts.
Campbell (80.4) rough matchup in week 1 for a guy facing a contract year and management flirting with any attractive available qb (cutler, harrington, cassel). Mixed reviews for a qb that hasn’t thrown more than 13 Tds in a season. However, It should be noted that Campbell’s career completion percentage (58.5) and passer rating (80.4) are both higher than those of his well-paid counterpart with the Giants, Eli Manning (55.9 and 76.1).
Russell (73.9) is a former first pick that held out for extra cash. Maybe his agent realized it would be the only check he’d receive. May weigh 300 lb after pre-game meal, but managed 6 Tds in last 3 starts. Tough matchup against San Diego but his future is now.
As the season goes on, we’ll monitor bad qb performances in the 4th quarter when the game is on the line. Ben Roethlisberger won’t be on that list:
15 for 15 in 4th and OT, tied game, shoulda won game, did win game.
Week One Poll Question
Obviously Stafford (NA) and Sanchez (NA) provide solid options due to college profile and step up in class.
Orton (71.1) ranks as the lowest ranked career passer listed as a Starter with considerable playing time. However, Orton does have wonder child coaching him and the Bengals attempting to remedy their defense.
Favre (85.4) believes that 310 career interceptions speaks for itself and warrants missing training camp.
Leftwich (80.3) is resting easier this evening knowing that Del Rio signed Terry Holt (age 33) to bolster a putrid receiving core. This should help get Troy Williamson (84 career receptions in 4 years) open how Mr. Del Rio?
Cassel (88.2) currently suffering from knee issues.

Rookies — Stafford gets the benefit of playing against the Saints defense in his debut, while Sanchez draws a much tougher task.
Veterans — Still hard to believe that the Titans won 13 games last year with Kerry Collins at the helm. Jarmarcus Russell looks like a possible play due to his horrid statistics and a matchup against the Bolts Defense.

New England’s eggs in Brady’s Knee
With a new offensive coordinator, a surgically repaired knee, and a host of new wideouts and worn down running backs, the Patriots offense is one play away from landing on the bad quarterback radar.
Today, Belchick released back up quarterback Kevin O’Connell and the depth chart behind Tom Brady (92.9) looks like this: Andrew Walter (52.6), Brian Hoyer (NA).
While the initial thought may be that New England will look for additional depth at the quarterback position as an insurance policy when other teams make final cuts next weekend, their hope is that Brady stays healthy. If I had my withers about the situation, the Patriots will land A.J. Feeley (69.6) in exchange for a draft pick.
Trent Edwards, A study in Bad quarterback
Trent Edwards (79.1) performance tonight against the Pittsburgh Steelers is a classic example of why I love the National Football League. The kid could flat out play in college; however, he struggles intensely with pro reads and a defeciency in talent. For instance, take a look at his line for tonight:
6 for 13, 31 yards which averages 2.4 ypa posting a standard 21.0 quarterback rating!!! Of course those stellar statistics do not include the infamous interception that led to a touchdown by James Farrior!! Hooray Trent Edwards.
Statistically, Edwards has complied some fantastic stats that rank him below the Kordell Stewart line despite his above line career qb rating. Trents has managed to fumble 13 times in 24 appearances as a professional. While he has only lost 5 in his career, this is clearly a concern that might present an issue with his new friend 2 (T.O.). Trent also sufferes from a 1 to 1 ratio of interceptions to touchdowns. . .however, last year he did manage to throw 11 touchdowns while only throwing to the other color 10 times.
Here is a look at his preseason stats –

Detroit Lions – A look at the battle to be a bad quarterback
There were not many positives from the 2008 Detroit Lions season. Bad quarteback fans gots a pleasant suprise when Dan Orlovsky (72.6) lined up as the starting quarteback for an NFL franchise on October 12, 2008. While Orlovsky managed to make it through the contest without turning the ball over (he did throw for 150 yards), he somehow managed to wonder through his own endzone while dropping back and looking for receivers. His comment sums up his place in bad quarterback history — “When they started blowing the whistle, I was like, ‘Did we false start, or were they offsides or something?’” Orlovsky said. “And I looked, and I was just like, ‘You’re an idiot.’”

Got to love Orlovsky
While Orlovsky is not competing for the job, these fine football players will get to manage the Detroit Lions in 2009.
Culpepper, Daunte (career passer rating – 89.9) - The big man struggled last year with the hapless motor town cast of apathetic talented role players. Daunte managed to be sacked 14 times in his 5 outings and found a way to throw 6 interceptions while posting a staggering career low 63.9 qb rating. He seems to be the guy by default until he is unseated by Matthew Stafford.
Stafford, Matthew (n/a) - The first pick of the 2009 draft, completed 62% of his passes at Georgia during his junior season. He got a 6 year, 41.7 million (guaranteed money) dollar contract. The learning curve will be closely monitored.
Stanton, Drew ( 95.0) - Obviously the career passer rating is a bit deceptive. What makes his stellar career very impressive is he managed to get sacked 6 times, while only attempting 17 passes. Clearly, Mr. Stanton is not familiar with the concept of throwing the ball away.
Summary of Lions quarterbacks — Clearly the quarterback position was not the only weakness for the 2008 Lions. They’ve got a new head coach and some talented skill position players to surround this cast of signal callers. They’ll make marginal strides and Daunte probably will keep them competitive, as he benefits from throwing to Calvin Johnson and new tightend Brandon Pettigrew.

A Look Back at 2008, Week 17
While most of the NFL community is concerned about the sudden decision by J.P. Losman to choose the UFL over possibly being the 7th arm in Oakland Raiders training camp, I thought it would be more interesting to look back on the dreadful performances of Week 17.
|
Clearly, a debate may rage on who had the worst performance of the weekend; however, Favre and Romo both had opportunities to make the post season during their horrid Week 17 outings. In the next few weeks, I’ll preview some of the ongoing battles in training camps in cities near you as well as provides some look back at our favorite bad quarterbacks and bad quarterback moments.
While not listed above, Jake Delhomme clearly outperformed the abovementioned individuals with his memorable playoff outing against the what may be the Worst Defense ever to play in a Superbowl.
Hello world!
Bad Quarterback Derby was created to recognize those quarterbacks who have somehow made it to the NFL despite their lack of skills. These bad quarterbacks may not have the tools to succeed as pro quarterbacks, but they certainly do have good acting skills in order to trick teams into drafting them and letting them play in actual NFL games. For these bad quarterbacks, there will be no passing records, Super Bowls, or Pro Bowls…but there is hope. They have the opportunity to forever carve their names in history as Bad Quarterback Derby Hall of Famers. Their incompetence is our entertainment.
