Breaking Down Suspect Quarterbacks Week 1
Each week, we’ll preview quarterbacks on the verge of performance that would make Heath Shuler (54.3) proud. As always, please remember some important Bad Quarterback considerations. Anytime a quarterback is listed, his career QB rating will be listed in parenthesis. Frequently, a bad quarterback will be measured against the Kordoza Line. This line represents Kordell Stewart’s (70.8) life time QB rating, which included 77 Touchdowns and 84 Interceptions. Hopefully, these characters outshine the previously mentioned signal callers.
Stafford (NA) – managed to throw 1 INT in every PRESEASON appearance. Offensive coordinator Scott Linehan summed up why Stafford won the job, “He’s made a significant impression on all of us, A quarterback has to know, and I think (head coach Jim Schwartz) does an outstanding job of letting guys know this is a realistic situation right here.” This guy will be considered a hero if he stays in the field of play…….bad Orlovsky
Sanchez (NA) – first JETS rookie quarterback to get a start on Opening Day since 1985. Rich Chimini of the NY Daily News sums it up best Sanchez started only 16 games at USC, a safe cocoon for college quarterbacks, he is an unknown in some respects. For instance: He never had a fourth-quarter comeback win on the road. In fact, he had only one at home, a three-point rally against Arizona. How will he respond on Sunday if he’s down by 10 in Houston?”
Edwards (79.1) hard to imagine that “the Trent Edwards” could run an offensive coordinator out of town. But he did and this comes from a guy that against Cleveland last year, he threw for 148 yards and three interceptions, but the following week he passed for 273 yards and tds. Edwards managed to go 2 – 8 in his last 10 starts.
Campbell (80.4) rough matchup in week 1 for a guy facing a contract year and management flirting with any attractive available qb (cutler, harrington, cassel). Mixed reviews for a qb that hasn’t thrown more than 13 Tds in a season. However, It should be noted that Campbell’s career completion percentage (58.5) and passer rating (80.4) are both higher than those of his well-paid counterpart with the Giants, Eli Manning (55.9 and 76.1).
Russell (73.9) is a former first pick that held out for extra cash. Maybe his agent realized it would be the only check he’d receive. May weigh 300 lb after pre-game meal, but managed 6 Tds in last 3 starts. Tough matchup against San Diego but his future is now.
As the season goes on, we’ll monitor bad qb performances in the 4th quarter when the game is on the line. Ben Roethlisberger won’t be on that list:
15 for 15 in 4th and OT, tied game, shoulda won game, did win game.
